Delegates from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) have arrived in Ethiopia on a fact finding mission regarding the ongoing government interference on the religious affairs of the Muslim community. During their stay, the delegates are expected to speak with government officials, organizers of the protest, the imprisoned leaders of the movement, scholars and opposition party leaders. It is to be recalled that USCIRF expressed its concern over the religious freedom violations by the Ethiopian government.
At the mean time, Muslims across the country have staged perhaps the biggest demonstration in the year long weekly protest this Friday December 14, 2012. Dubbed ” We are Millions” this protest was called in response to prime Minister Hailemariam’s recent claim, during his Aljazeera interview, that those who are protesting government interference are a tiny minority. Confirmed reports so far indicate that rallies were held in Dessie, Walliso, Harar, Mattu and at Grand Anwar mosque at the capital. Despite relentless effort by the security to instigate conflict, the demonstrations at each of the towns where protests were staged have been peaceful and concluded without any incident.
